Exposure Effects

Exposure Effects

As characters wander through Norfinbury, the setting weighs on them in interesting ways. Depression, mania, isolation... The travelers begin to react oddly, and it only grows worse as time goes by. Interacting with others seems to lessen the effects, however...

Starting on the second OOC month your character is in Norfinbury, you must select one of the following effects for your character, starting at level one. They will suffer constantly from this effect, whatever it is, and every other month you will select again, picking either a completely new effect or leveling up one of your current effects until it's maxed out. If left alone, your character will quickly become a bit of a mess.

However, you can also lower these effects by providing bonus activity or important character moments. A thread may count as one or the other, but cannot be used more than once. The amount needed to lower or remove an effect is variant based upon level:

To remove level one effects, you need 10 extra comments in one month or one character event of minor importance. The comments must be in no more than two additional threads. A minor character event can be as simple as making friends, adjusting the setting in a constructive (or relevantly destructive) way, or trying to help someone else out.

To lower level two effects, you need 20 extra comments over no more than two months, one character event of moderate importance, or two character events of minor importance. The comments must be in no more than four additional threads. A moderate character event involves character development, significant changes in CR, attempts to interact with the setting on a more plot-based level, and interacting with search results.

To lower level three effects, you need 30 extra comments over no more than three months, one character event of major importance, one character event of moderate importance and one character event of minor importance, or three character events of minor importance. The comments must be in no more than six additional threads. A major character event involves serious character development, serious changes in CR, plot-relevant, and persistent searches that reveal or unlock something.

Note that level three effects will be lowered to level two, and level two effects will be lowered to level one. They will not instantly vanish. Effects can be increased or decreased during activity check periods. Note that if you continue to use the same CR over and over for bonus threads, we may ask you to provide different threads. Also of importance is that you can also use extra comments from your normal AC threads. These don't count toward the two/four/six maximum; those limits only refer to the amount of extra threads you can provide toward the bonus.

Effects
(everything in a lower level also applies to the higher levels)

Isolation
Level One
A distaste for being around large groups of people. Smaller groups are alright, but large groups seem chaotic, loud, and annoying. Accompanied by a slightly lower desire to share resources unless necessary, and an increased tendency to hide things away for themselves. Those close to them will be more able to get them to cooperate.

Level Two
Avoidance of large groups entirely, along with a distaste for being around more than one or two other people at a time. Large groups are frighteningly chaotic and dangerous, and it's difficult to focus on anything when so many people are around. Accompanied by a very low desire to share resources unless absolutely life-or-death necessary and a compulsion to hide things away where others won't find them. Those close to them will be more able to get them to cooperate.

Level Three
Complete avoidance of others. People are chaotic, unreliable, and dangerous. It's much safer to remain alone, and the more people are around, the more frightening the situation seems. Speaking to people at a distance is fine as long as they don't want to come find you. Will not stay with people unless absolutely required to. Accompanied by an unwillingness to share resources under any circumstances and an obsessive compulsion to hide things away where others won't find them. Only those who are extremely close to them will be able to get them to cooperate.

Paranoia
Level One
The feeling that people are watching you--staring in through curtainless windows at night, peeking from around corners, standing just behind you. Can be dismissed, but proves to be annoyingly persistent. It's hard to resist the urge to keep checking the corners and turning around suddenly to see who's there, no matter how many times no one is.

Level Two
The feeling that people are not only watching you but following you, even if they have to stand in the footprints you leave in the snow to do it. Flashes of light and shadow in the corners of your eyes that seem like it might be proof your feelings aren't unfounded. And are the things you carry around being messed with? It feels like they are, and it's easy to blame those around you for it, unless you're close enough to them to know they're trustworthy.

Level Three
The knowledge--even if it's wrong, even if people are telling you otherwise--that you're being watched and followed. Sometimes you can almost see them grinning at you in the darkness or giggling just out of sight and through a doorway. People are definitely messing with your stuff, too--even if it's all there, you can tell things have been moved, rifled through, contaminated. Those around you are blamed aggressively, and only those closest to you will be able to convince you they didn't do anything. Even then it will involve an argument.

Pain
Level One
Vague aches and soreness that could be dismissed as repercussions of the nomadic lifestyle if not for their persistence. While easily ignored at this stage, they never go away unless medicated into silence for a few hours.

Level Two
Aches, soreness, and headaches--it's like you've been doing heavy labor for hours, but you haven't been doing anything unusual. It's difficult to sleep like this, but painkillers still help.

Level Three
Constant soreness that can only be ignored through practice, accompanied by random stabbing pains with no source that can't be ignored at all, only endured. The constant assault makes fatigue common, which is unfortunate since it's difficult to sleep like this. Painkillers help a little, but only the strong stuff really does much.

Illness
Level One
A minor fever and a bit of a cough. Nothing to be too concerned about; maybe you've just caught a bit of a cold. Of course, it doesn't ever seem to go away, no matter what sort of medication you take or how well you care for yourself. Even dying doesn't seem to impact it at all.

Level Two
A moderate fever, persistent cough, and occasional dizziness and fatigue. Whatever you've got, it's definitely getting worse, and it still persistently resists drugs and TLC, clinging to you like glue.

Level Three
A moderate fever, persistent, bloody cough, fatigue, and dizziness. The coughing is especially concerning, but it doesn't seem as if you're in danger of bleeding to death, at least. Maybe you're just coughing so much your throat is rubbed raw? It's difficult to concentrate and you mostly want to sleep, but even getting over eight hours a night doesn't do much to help.

Obsession
Level One
An unusual amount of focus on something. It could be anything--collecting or destroying a certain object, helping or harming a certain person, certain types of locations, the options are limitless. You feel a little more secure when you're following along with this focus, but it can be ignored as well.

Level Two
A strong focus on something--anything, really. The obsession takes on a back and forth quality--the obsession is with the object, location, or person. Sometimes you will want to collect the object, sometimes you'll want to destroy your entire collection. You'll help the object of your attention only to hurt them yourself. The urges can be fought against, but it's difficult and requires constant attention when you're tempted. Giving into temptation, meanwhile, makes you feel a lot better about your situation in general.

Level Three
An extreme obsession with something. You don't really care if others say it doesn't make sense or is dangerous, you need to focus on whatever it is you're obsessed with. You love it and hate it at the same time, and even when the object of your obsession isn't around, it's lingering in the back of your mind. It's nearly impossible to fight this urge, and you feel like indulging it is the only way for you to feel normal.

Depression
Level One
A general sense of sadness and lethargy, albeit in small amounts. Things seems a bit hopeless at times. These feelings can be pushed past easily enough most of the time, but they do linger in the back of your mind, and in quiet times where you have nothing else to do they become more insistent.

Level Two
Sadness and lethargy seep into your thoughts quite often--sadness especially. It's possible to force yourself to get things done, but everything feels really upsetting and hopeless. You have a need to distract yourself with noise and company, because if you don't think as much, it's harder for the feelings to stick to you. It's worst at night, especially alone.

Level Three
The sadness goes away, replaced by emotional numbness. The lethargy is worse. It's hard to motivate yourself to do anything, even the most basic of tasks. You don't feel much of anything at this point, living in a haze where, in a distant but undeniable way, you're certain everything is going to be awful forever. It's worst at night, especially alone.

Mania
Level One
Heightened energy and decreased need for sleep--which is pretty great, actually, right? The mild increase in distractibility is less so, but you don't really mind. You feel pretty good about everything, and even the upsetting things are less so. It might make you come across as a bit callous, actually.

Level Two
Heightened energy, decreased need for sleep (three to five hours is just fine), and a high level of distractibility, except when you decide you want to focus on something, in which case you get very focused and intense about it. You can't really be interrupted when you've decided you're going to do something, not without someone who knows you well talking you down a bit. You're very talkative, feeling almost like you need to keep talking all day. Upsetting things don't bother you; you feel pretty good about yourself no matter what.

Level Three
Heightened energy, a need for no more than three hours of sleep a night (sometimes you just skip sleeping), and distractibility alternating uneasily with intense, manic focus. You almost never stop talking, and sometimes it feels like something bad might happen if you do. You're very active and move around nigh-constantly, and when you do get focused, it's often on something very dangerous. But you feel invincible, so it's fine! You're pretty awesome, as far as you're concerned. The problems of others slide past your notice like so many unimportant ants, which makes sense because your thoughts are racing at probably illegal speeds.

This is all a little annoying to deal with, isn't it? Well, there are a few people who are much less effected by the exposure than others: anyone with a beacon will only have to add an effect every four months. Progression is cut in half this way. It's nice, of course, but you will have to deal with the side effects of having your beacon on...

LEVEL ONE/TWO/THREE Two
Player Name: Psi
Character Name: Haurchefant Greystone ([personal profile] silverfuller)

Explanation of Relevance: There are a few things happening in this interaction. Here is where some members of this traveling group learn that creatures can get in through windows (a discovery made by Haurchefant but at the time it happened he didn't know it was unusual behavior). It's also where Haurchefant first physically meets Doctor House and the playful banter between the two escalates into a nearly violent outburst from the normally gentle Elezen knight, changing the nature of their CR.

(if approved I just want to bank tickets for now, not interested in removing anything just yet!)

Character Name: England ([personal profile] keepscalm)
Character Moment: here
Explanation of Relevance: This is the first time England has used anything besides text with anyone other than his castmates over the network, which was a big part of him trying to keep his network identity separate from his physical one. That's been holding him back from really making connections in Norfinbury, so this is a step closer to trusting someone besides his friends from canon. Also she died and that made him pretty upset on top of the Sealand thing.

LEVEL TWO
Player Name: Cee
Character Name: England ([personal profile] keepscalm)
Character Moment: here
Explanation of Relevance: They do fight a lot, but this is kind of something important to England. Two people he knows have died in the span of a week and America is his only friend here. This is the second time he's tried to reach out for support about these deaths and had it go badly, so he has decided that America does not care as much as he should and England will not be confiding sensitive things to him any more.

Gonna use the level one ticket to get rid of England's level one paranoia and bank the rest!

(To knock off December's addendum of a new level if that's possible! I will be keeping his current level of pain which is at level one.)

LEVEL TWO(?)
Character Moment: here
Explanation of Relevance: Sephiroth's appearance is a big, big deal for Zack for numerous reasons, sending him spiraling into a chaotic grasping of straws. First off, he believed Sephiroth to have been dead and this was after going crazy and burning down Nibelheim. Secondly, this is the introduction of the possibilities of people from his own world being pulled from different points in time, something Zack hadn't originally considered despite his talk with Hiro simply because it never came up after that and there just weren't any inconsistencies between Kunsel, Cloud, and himself. This leaves him in this confused mess of a state though because while he would like to believe Sephiroth, especially considering their past history as comrades in arms, he also was the firsthand witness of what he'd done at Nibelheim and can't just dismiss the possibility of it being a thing.

(Banking please!)

LEVEL TWO
Character Moment: here
Explanation of Relevance: Zack finally discovers that Cissnei's been traveling with Sephiroth which puts him at odds. He realizes that if Sephiroth had any ill intent, she probably wouldn't still be alive. But on top of that, he's hit with a sledgehammer of a truth that he can't avoid Sephiroth any longer. The part of being safe about this is confronting him with the truth- a truth which he also finally vulnerably admits he's unsure he'll be able to deliver without causing Nibelheim all over again. He agrees in the end to do it if not reluctantly.

(Banking please!)

LEVEL THREE(?)
Character Moment: here
Explanation of Relevance: This moment redefines his relationship with Clayton. He and Kunsel go three days out of their way to help him out only for Clayton to get in the way of the fight. Zack finds himself at odds with the doctor once again after he feels Clayton puts Kunsel's life on the line. Following their moral codes as SOLDIER, he and Kunsel continue the operation in the end, but by the end of the day, it's clear to Zack that Clayton lied to his face. He won't ever trust him. No matter what he says, actions speak louder than words. And so Clayton lost Zack's trust, respect, and completely strained what friendship they had that day. Zack's not even sure if he would still bother to consider him one.

(Banking please!)

Please swat me if you think any of the levels would be considered inaccurate!

Explanation of Relevance: Two important things happen in this thread - 1) Miranda has done something relatively selfless with little expectation of reward (level one because she was going to be there anyway), and 2) giving her real name to a complete stranger when not compelled to.

LEVEL TWO
Player Name: Banah
Character Name: Miranda ([personal profile] cloneprincess)

Explanation of Relevance: For perhaps the first time in Norfinbury, Miranda is regarding someone as an equal without the compulsion to manipulate them or lie to them constantly. Explanation of Relevance: It's a fight, of course, but one where America is completely out of sync with what's even going on, which makes it more relevant. He sort of understands why England is reacting the way he is, but his coping methods aren't at all the same, on top of having mania issues. It's caused longer-lasting tension between England and America where America doesn't really know where he stands with England at this point.

Explanation of Relevance: I think this should count, but I'm not sure! This thread in particular is when Ed finds out that Al saw the portal of Truth before he came to Norfinbury. It means that Ed doesn't know for sure what Al saw, or why he was in the portal to begin with. They trust each other with everything, and they're both hiding things here, so it was an important reveal. And to realize that the fighting back home may or may not be going on still -- that they could have failed.

Character Moment: here and continued here. Both in progress but the description of the moment isn't likely to change.
Explanation of Relevance: Enoch bravely charging into battle to rescue anyone is not significant. However, how he feels about this someone is - he's latched onto Clayton to an unusual degree over his time here, in a way that would normally only be reserved for immortals. In this thread, this attachment is given a name. Enoch will tell Clayton, in one thread or the other, that he is "the closest to a brother [he] has had in centuries". It's partly naming what has always been there, but also part of coming to grips with the revelation from the medical records that he is no longer ageless, allowing family to reassert itself above friendship again, now that family need not be transient anymore.

Feel free to rule this as a one if this still isn't significant enough for two (or bump it up to three if I've underestimated it due to all the familiar elements).

Player Name: Cee
Character Name: England ([personal profile] keepscalm)
Character Moment: here
Explanation of Relevance: He and America made up! Sort of. They didn't actually discuss the fight about Miranda and Sealand, but they did make an effort to dissolve the tension. They came to a mutual understanding that they're staying together because they want to, not out of obligation, which is pretty significant for either of these idiots to admit, since they both often dance around their feelings when it comes to one another. They also cleared up some misconceptions about their history and how they've always felt about each other; that is, not ever hating one another despite the historical conflicts they've had. Nation relationships are often fluid, so this constant is also significant for a pair of emotionally stunted morons.
