Samples do not have to be from within the game itself. The sample in question should utilize the game's setting and be written as if the character has been established in it, but it does not have to be game canon and does not require a character to be accepted into the game to write. Threads on the test drive meme are a good example of how to fill this sample requirement.

The ten comment guideline is referring to thread samples. Some people prefer to write standalone pieces or theoretical thread starters for their samples, but not actually thread with anyone. If the sample does involve threading with someone, then it requires ten comments from your character.
