He is killed as soon as he touches the door. If the others come in looking for him (as I assume will happen), he's been disemboweled. It happens too quickly for him to even react--the sounds of the incident come across over the tablet, but, perhaps mercifully, it's over too fast for Zell to fully process the pain enough to scream.
Of course, the tablets shouldn't even play sound in the church in the first place, so maybe that's a little unsettling, too.
