Search Requests | |||
For the most part, characters are allowed to travel from uncovered square to uncovered square and gather basic items on their own, provided they announce what they're taking on the appropriate page. However, it's important that we can keep track of how everyone is moving daily, and you and your characters may want to search for more plot-relevant items. There are also squares on the map that no one has traveled to, and remain a mystery until explicitly uncovered. Thus, the search page has been created for this use. You must report your character's movements in your thread. We want to make sure you haven't made any math mistakes and keep characters from accidentally teleporting around the map, for one, and we also want to make sure your character gets to experience any location-relevant situations. We will respond to your characters' movement updates within 48 hours with any monsters they would have run into that day and anything that would happen of note on a specific square your character traveled through, in addition to pointing out any math errors. In the case of monster encounters, while the day they happen on is random, you will be able to select exactly where they encounter them. You will have to respond to us telling us how the character(s) handled the monster. Unless something unusual happens, we will not reply to your character movement updates. How much searching and traveling your character can do is based on the weather, any movement penalties your character may have, and any events that may otherwise hinder travel. Common sources of movement penalties are injury and being over-encumbered--if you want to try and drag a mattress around with you, don't expect to get anywhere very quickly! Travel and search are based on the squares of the map, and all actions are discussed in terms of squares. All searching uses up squares, which means every search reduces the amount of squares your character can travel. No searching is a free action, and is added on top of square movement, so make sure to double check your math! Moving to a square and searching a building in that square both have to be thought of as separate things, not as using the same amount of time. We will provide a limit of the amount of squares your characters have to act which encompass all actions a character takes that day; if they go over that limit, they will not be able to do anything beyond the last action that would have used up a legitimate block of time. Much like finding normal items, searches are split up into quick searches and thorough searches. A quick search takes up one square of travel time per building or area searched, while a thorough search takes up two squares of travel time per building or area searched. If you thoroughly search three buildings on one square, that would take up all of your movement at once, two per building searched. Note that you will not always successfully find something, and the more specific you are in explaining how your character is searching, the better. For example, if your character really is going to give dragging a mattress around a try, they can take one from a house if you let us know. We can both adjust the descriptions of the locations and tell you potential results/penalties. Anything Else? They are not actually searching. Yet. There is nothing to find in this building while that door is locked. THAT LOCKED DOOR IS A PROBLEM. Also, that door has been bugging a lot of them, especially after what the Deleted characters have said. So what they are actually doing is this: Kunsel has bleach (found) and an AAA battery (given to him by Clayton). According to websites of dubious intent, which I am using in lieu of the book on how to make bombs from basic household products that Kunsel found, this is sufficient to make a small bomb.
(In the interests of not actually encouraging people to make bombs, I am going to be vague about the process here. Nivi will send the mods a link to the web page where the process is described more fully.)
Kunsel has done his best to harvest the stuff he needs from the AAA battery. It wasn't fun or pretty, since he didn't have a hacksaw, but between a hammer, various knives, nails, and pieces of scrap, he managed. Once inside the house, he taped the bleach bottle directly to the knob of the locked door with packing tape. Then he taped Hiro's tablet to the wall/door opposite from the locked door and had Hiro set it to transmit video to Kunsel's tablet so they can record what happens. In the mean time, Zack is using his hammer to hammer shut any vents he finds to hopefully stop or slow down any potential interference from snowhell spiders (or whatever). Then Kunsel added the stuff to the bleach bottle and capped it, and then they all ran out the door and slammed it shut. It may not be a large bomb, but they are hoping that the direct impact with the door knob it's taped to will be enough to blow it off. Either way, it's not smart to stick around where there may soon be explosions and harmful fumes.
Their next step depends heavily on what they see on the video feed.

Anything Else? SHIT'S ABOUT TO GET MCGUYVER IN HERE and probably fail but it's about time jim got to build some ridiculous nonsense. As usual, Jim, Kunsel, Zack, and Zell are traveling together. I don't think we'll have anyone else in the party until tomorrow.
First: a drawing. Assume whatever the door layout is, they built to match it; this is more concept than anything.
Working, in this case, is as follows: They're ripping up the wooden floorboards in the lobby (they will put them back when they're done! Please don't yell at us about property damage, cthulhu-chan.) Not all of them, just enough boards to combine into four long pieces (using scrap nails that Zack and Zell collected approx. 1 million years ago and whatever was used to attach them to the floor in the lobby + tape for added stability). Each piece is the width of a single floorboard and the length of the upstairs hallways. They connect the pieces using two crossbar the width of the upstairs hallway as shown in the drawing. (These can be assembled on the floors themselves if need be.) On the outsides of the long pieces they use tape/glue dots/whatever to attach the keycards in such a way that they can be inserted into the doors while attached to the board.
Two people per floor station themselves at the crossbars (which should be noted are built so that the person nearest the unlocked door is still a good distance away should any horrible death come springing out).
For their first attempt, the pair on the second floor lowers the boards and inserts all the keys for *only* the second floor.
If this has no effect, they make a second attempt, using the tablets to coordinate timing and inserting all 20 cards at once.
If this ALSO has no effect, as soon as we have a fifth person they will be making a THIRD attempt, this time doing the above + having someone insert the manager's office keycard at the same time. [edit: just to be clear we do not yet have a 5th person and are not sure who/when it will be, this is just future plans. Unless Mochi can do it.]
(PS Mostly unrelated: That night Jim will be taking his tablet around to all accessible desks and looking for somewhere to insert it ala the Samantha Stevens' desk at the school. He will also continue to talk to the building; if attempts 1 and 2 fail he will loudly whine 'CAN YOU JUST GIVE US A HINT?')
