Application

Applications are closed permanently. Thank you to everyone who has applied over the years!

Before applying for a character, make sure you've read the rules and FAQ. You should also refer to the application guide to see what we're looking for in our applications. You may apply for one character per application cycle and three characters total. Please put your character's name and canon in the subject line of your application comment. Applications must be posted directly to this post and cannot be links. We will screen your application if you request it of us after we review it.

Application challenges are allowed, but someone who did not place a reserve challenge cannot challenge a reserved application. Once reservations expire, an application challenge can only be placed before we process the character application of the applicant you would like to challenge.

In the event of us nearing our application cap and having more applications than slots, we will attempt to choose the most well-written applications. First-time applicants will be processed first, then applications for second characters, and finally applications for third characters. We may allow more applications to be submitted than we have slots for in the name of greater selection. We will clarify in our response if an application is not being allowed into the game because of the cap or because of issues with the application not meeting the standards of the game.

1st person sample-
(as a note, text that has been struck out are things Red has typed but deleted before posting)

[Red rubs at her temples as she contemplates just what to post to the network. That post from last night? That was the third time someone had foolishly locked themselves up in the funeral home. Three times now, and it always got the same result. Red understands trying the same thing multiple times, but this is just too much.]

@Red; text

What were you thinking?! Is it really so important that you risk not coming back at all just to

Was that really necessary? I think we got the point the first two

All you're doing is making others worry

We have all seen this happen three times now, I think we get the point. Let's talk this through before anyone tries it again. There's no guarantee that anyone will come back, and with three tries already completed, we don't need to risk a fourth person for it.

Please come back.

3rd person sample-

Sometimes, on the nights when Red found a house that sheltered her from the cold slightly better than usual, Red managed to sleep long enough to dream.

They were always warm, inviting. Usually she was in a field of wheat, with a squat farmhouse and a tall barn in the distance. Even though there was a breeze, it didn't feel cold. Nothing felt cold there. She would walk through the wheat at a leisurely pace, clearly moving towards something but not in a hurry to get there.

He was always there too. It had only been a few weeks since she last saw him, but already his face was beginning to fade from her memory. Instead, she remembered how tall he was, how safe it felt to be around him. And his voice, that was what always came through her dreams clearly. Even in her dreams he spoke to her, and everything felt like it would be okay.

"Hey."

"...Hi."

But as soon as she found him, she always woke up, the warmth of the sunlight fading into the cold of the snow. This time was no different than the rest, and Red found herself shivering as she pulled his coat around her shoulders.

He was gone now. Besides her memories, this was all she had left of him.

Mornings were the worst. Before her mind was awake, when she was still fighting away both sleep and the shivers, Red rarely smiled. She never cried, especially not with traveling companions with her. She didn't want them to wake up and worry about her. Instead, she quietly moved over to a spot further away from them, curled up in a ball, and waited.

When people were awake, she could smile. She could act like everything was okay, even if she was feeling torn up inside. It was much easier for her to pretend when she had a person to pretend for. Performances were her thing, after all. And when she had something to work on, like finding food or figuring out some obscure puzzle ('dig deep' indeed), she was alright. It was moments like this, when she had nothing to distract her, that Red actually had a somber look on her face.

It would be a bit longer before anyone else in her group woke up, so while she waited, she pulled out her tablet and opened the notepad app on her tablet. If nothing else, maybe she could work a bit more on one of her songs. ...well, poetry now, technically. Even though she could hum along, she would never be able to sing these words, so it wouldn't ever be a song.

Okay, maybe it wasn't a day for writing songs. Red flipped to another document in the notepad app, one labeled 'andthentheresthisasshole', and started typing furiously, writing out her feelings about a certain someone whom she was very displeased with. Not that they would ever see what she had written, but writing out her frustrations seemed to help, sometimes.

Hopefully nobody surprises her, though, or they might catch a glimpse of her rantings, which would totally wreck her 'cool, calm, collected' outward appearance she tried to project most of the time.

Here you go!

------

To begin with, Red is extremely intelligent. She went to a college for civic planners and architects, and a particularly demanding one at that. However, instead of focusing on civic planning, she chose to follow her passions and double-major in music and linguistics instead of in any of the more traditional degrees for that school. She wrote and performed all of her own music, showing a strong command of both written and spoken language. Her skill with the written word was unprecedented, and firmly cemented her as a talented musician.

Another mark of Red's intelligence is how combat works within Transistor. Throughout the game, the player unlocks functions, which are basically different types of attacks. Crash(), for example, hits an enemy and makes them vulnerable to further attacks, while Cull() is a very strong attack that stuns an enemy, and Bounce() is an attack that bounces off of the first enemy and hits others in turn. Each function has three different properties, and can be used as an attack, a modifier to an attack, or as a passive effect. So Crash(Cull()), for example, would perform the Crash() attack at a higher damage rate, and Crash (Bounce()) allows Crash() to hit more than one enemy at a time. Part of the game is experimenting with the different variations and seeing which attacks yield the best results. Since Red is, in-universe, the one setting up all of these functions, it is implied that she knows a fair bit of computer coding and how to use what she learns to efficiently kill enemies.

Red is also a very passionate person. She became so popular as a singer because of her skill with words and her hauntingly beautiful voice, but even those things wouldn't have been enough to sustain her career if she didn't actually care about what she was doing. She loves her work, and she loves her fans. That passion shines through her performances, which draw in the crowds with ease. Red's determination to do right by her fans is one of the reasons why she is so popular.

In addition, Red has quite the commanding personality. In all of her songs, she has a gentle yet powerful voice, one that can warm even the coldest of hearts. And though her songs all have pretty benign messages, they are still inspiring. Even after she loses her voice, she can still take control of a situation with ease. Her face is just as expressive as her voice had been, and she can hold people's attention, or even silence their arguments with a stern gaze. She just has a huge presence, one that can take up an entire room. It is very hard for her to go unnoticed.

The attack did change Red in some ways, though. Prior to being attacked, Red was always very patient and calm, choosing to talk things through rather than resort to violence. Once her lover was killed and her voice was stolen from her, all of that changed. She grew bitter and angry, and set out on a quest for revenge. Her determination, her passion, it all became focused on hunting down the Camerata and demanding answers from them. This shows a pretty important facet of Red's personality: while she is normally a calm and collected person, if you wrong her, she will make you regret it.

Of course, to get to them, she has to survive against insurmountable odds. Red is not a fighter (as evidenced by the fact that she had a bodyguard to protect her), and she is in no way prepared to fight other people, let alone the monsters known as 'The Process'. But despite how ill-prepared she is, Red is a determinator, and she can force herself through just about anything. Despite having watched someone she cared for die while protecting her, she quickly pulls herself back up, grabs the Transistor, and pushes forward. She knows nothing about combat, but she learns quickly, picking up function after function as she goes. She is a survivor, first and foremost, and she won't let herself fail.

The interesting thing is, despite how angry Red can get when she is wronged, that anger doesn't usually linger. Though she has her moments, Red is ultimately a very understanding person. Time and time again, both in the game itself and in the backstory provided in the character profiles, Red is shown to sympathize with people. When someone started a riot because of her singing, she apologized and said she only intended on singing, not on inciting violence. When the Camerata show how human and flawed they are, Red begins to understand them better, and by the end of the game she has reached a point where she can give them a kind goodbye. It is hard for Red to stay mad at people, because ultimately she understands that everyone makes bad decisions sometimes, and if they express genuine regret for bad choices they make then it's worth coming to terms with them. Even if she doesn't agree with a person's actions, she can usually at least understand why they did something.

Despite never speaking within the game itself, Red has quite the personality. Unlike most 'voiceless protagonists', where the player's choices affect their personality, Red has a set personality from the get-go that shines through her actions rather than her words. If you leave her standing idle for a while, she adjusts her grip on the Transistor, showing how unusual it is for her to be holding something so heavy. She also fusses with her hair, showing that she does care about her appearance, even though she may possibly be in danger. In addition, there are frequent news updates at terminals spread throughout the city, which Red can respond to. For most of her responses, she starts out typing something serious, or trying to give out real information, but eventually deletes what she writes and tries again, wording it slightly differently. This typically happens 3-4 times before she finally types something innocuous. This shows that her first instinct is to call attention to what is really going on, but she quickly stops herself for the sake of everyone else. People really listen to her, and if she started spewing doomsday warnings, it might induce a panic. Even though she wants to reveal the Camerata's deeds to the world, she stops herself, for the sake of everyone else.

Ultimately, that is one of Red's most important characteristics: she honestly cares about other people. Though she is powerful and can move the general public with her songs, she still wants to keep them safe. She can get angry at people sometimes, but eventually she will come back around and be friendly again. For her, the greatest joy in life is experiencing it with others, which means that sometimes you have to work past frustrations and try to understand others.
