Application

Applications are closed permanently. Thank you to everyone who has applied over the years!

Before applying for a character, make sure you've read the rules and FAQ. You should also refer to the application guide to see what we're looking for in our applications. You may apply for one character per application cycle and three characters total. Please put your character's name and canon in the subject line of your application comment. Applications must be posted directly to this post and cannot be links. We will screen your application if you request it of us after we review it.

Application challenges are allowed, but someone who did not place a reserve challenge cannot challenge a reserved application. Once reservations expire, an application challenge can only be placed before we process the character application of the applicant you would like to challenge.

In the event of us nearing our application cap and having more applications than slots, we will attempt to choose the most well-written applications. First-time applicants will be processed first, then applications for second characters, and finally applications for third characters. We may allow more applications to be submitted than we have slots for in the name of greater selection. We will clarify in our response if an application is not being allowed into the game because of the cap or because of issues with the application not meeting the standards of the game.

Personality: As the child of a Teyrn, Cousland's blue blood tendencies are deeply rooted in her psyche. She was steeped in the ideals of nobility - tempered by the wisdom and patience of both her parents' experience navigating the political battlefields of Ferelden. Unyielding stamina of both mind and body, the charisma to rally the commonfolk under one banner, grace in victory and defeat.

Unfortunately, seeing as Cousland was both a bratty younger sibling and prone to gleefully ignoring what she was told to do and instead doing whatever she wanted, some of those ideals didn't quite take they way they were intended. Stamina became outright pigheadedness, charisma became bossiness, and grace... didn't actually change that much. She didn't develop a resentful nature despite being spoiled rotten as a child.

But then "stamina" doesn't just extend to the physical sense; Cousland has a zealous streak for arguing simply for the joy of arguing, even if it's not with the intent of riling up her conversational partner. She just likes to debate subjects solely for the sake of a friendly disagreement (and there's a special kind of smugness only achieved after winning such a competition). Hearing different opinions and the reasons backing them up is always interesting, since it's best to widen one's horizons, right?
She also makes her decisions at a measured pace; everything from what to have for breakfast to planning tactics for an upcoming battle is very carefully sized up with all options explored before she settles on a path to take after making sure her decision is the correct one. She can’t be hurried along on that process and will stubbornly stick to her guns if someone tries to change her mind, often digging her heels in and refusing to budge an inch until the person interfering concedes defeat. The Companions do give their opinions on whatever they would choose to do whenever the player is presented with a crossroads... that doesn't mean Cousland would change her mind once it's made up.

If an argument persists (and is crossing the line from friendly disagreement to something more aggressive), she has a certain way of shrugging it off in the passive-aggressive fashion of ‘yeah, well, that’s just, like, your opinion man’ in favor of more pleasing conversational topics instead. It often comes off as her being patronizing - which in all honesty isn't that far from the truth. She simply thinks there's better things to do and other people to chat up. Besides, her opinion is the only one that matters, so what should she care if some commoner wants to complain? Life is too short to waste on unpleasantness.

To follow up on said avoidance, Cousland deals with her problems by not dealing with her problems if that makes any sense. Delaying tactics and the fine art of conversational deflection gives her plenty of time to mull over whether or not duking it out with someone (literally or figuratively) over something trivial is worth her time and effort.
Nine times out of ten the answer is ‘no’, but there is the rare circumstance otherwise. Sometimes she’s lucky and the dispute is completely forgotten by both sides, so they can resume being amiable if not just tolerating each other with a bare minimum of dislike.

As a noble, Cousland is a great lover of the comforts of being rich: seasoned red wine, good conversation, bad romance books, aesthetically pleasing surroundings, and excellent food to name a few. Especially food, with her Grey Warden appetite at work.
Cousland is, unsurprisingly, notoriously vain and keeps herself obsessively groomed - no small feat when considering traveling conditions as well as how stubborn bloodstains can be if left to sit long enough. She is a packrat as well, in the fashion of most materialistic individuals; always rifling through drawers and abandoned bags in her travels.
If there’s a trophy to be had (such as the skull of some large beast during a hunting trip) she’s never tardy about calling first dibs. It’s not uncommon for her house or room to be lavishly decorated with objects from her conquests such as teeth, weapons, rare books, etc for her to smugly display to anyone unfortunate enough to be standing around at the time. On certain occasions, after a strong friendship has been nurtured, she may grudgingly part with one of her treasures and gift her closest companions with items they may feel personal connections to.

Only rarely, though. Like, once in a blue moon. And with the rest of the planets aligning perfectly.

It's probably simpler just to go out and buy stuff yourself tbqh.

Now while the Warden is pretty much seated firmly with her ass glued to the saddle of a high horse plus the silver spoon stuffed in her mouth, every fiber of her being firmly believes in the idea of living (and dying) for a cause. A just, righteous cause where the life's work of one extraordinary man or woman can rock the very bones of the world Ferelden is built on. Underneath her usual blasé mannerisms, surprisingly the Warden is a fierce idealist that would like nothing more than to be remembered as the last, bravest daughter of the Cousland line.

Naturally her brother Fergus is still alive so the whole 'weh weh I'm the only family survivor' thing is null and void but she doesn't know that.

The nobility, in her mind, should be the first line of defense of the common folk. The elevated position they enjoy so much is born of some distant, remarkable ancestor, and embodying virtue is the best way to pay tribute to that ancestor's memory. After all, no mud-drenched farmhand could give two shits about some politician showing up to give him a flowery speech about protecting his betters and enlisting in the army, right? Far better to lead by example and gain respect that way. No army can fight at their full potential while some milksop issues commands from the rear.
If that means sacrificing her own interests for the good of her country, so be it. She hasn't quite learned yet that sharing the duties of command is nothing to be ashamed of or that there's no need to take up causes left and right if they aren't terribly important; little Timmy's kitten being trapped in a tree hardly needs her attention when there's more pressing matters at hand elsewhere.

Which again brings us back around to the weirdly selfless arrogant streak. She's narcissistic to the point of accepting nothing less than peak performance from herself - that includes shouldering burdens that would crush a normal man - since petty things like weakness and sloth is for the "common folk". While that's normally a good thing since she does nothing halfassed, on the flip side, failure of even the smallest variety often leaves her angry with herself for not performing better. The effect of success or defeat is greatly magnified by her ego. There's been the odd occasion where she'd shut herself into a private space for a day or two to gripe and triple check the nature of her shortcomings, in preparation of avoiding it again in the future.

So, in a roundabout way, her being a snob is beneficial to Mr. and Mrs. Average Peasant. Cousland simply can't trust the "important" responsibilities to anyone else but herself.

Flavor Abilities: In a nutshell: Cousland is an experienced shield and sword user most at home when toe-to-toe with enemies, directing the flow of battle from the frontlines within a small unit of fighters. She is slow and exceptionally tough when fully geared, preferring to wage her battles as contests of stamina prior to finishing off her foes once they tire.

As a Grey Warden she has the additional perk of sensing nearby Darkspawn and/or the Archdemon in charge of said Darkspawn, along with fellow Grey Wardens. General rule of thumb is if it has Tainted blood, then Wardens can sense it - not that it'll really be relevant in Snowblind, but you know. Stuff.
Last but not least, Grey Wardens eat a lot. If she has it her way she'll be eating heartily and often, although she can go for some length of time without food. Just expect a lot of grouching about it.

Her war dog is of the Mabari breed: large, hardy dogs that can understand and follow complex commands. Aside from their unusual intelligence, they're really just super chunky mastiffs.

Suitability: Considering Cousland is coming from a very short, very intense war, she'll spend the first little while considerably shell-shocked when confronted with the fact she's gone and died. Fortunately snow and subzero temperatures are no strangers to her, so aside from probably having some hilarious misunderstandings with modern food storage (i.e. shaking up carbonated drinks to see what it does or puncturing an aerosol can of whipping cream because how else would you open that stuff) she'll adapt fairly quickly.
Once she gets a handle on how the tablets work, she'll spend the majority of her time aggressively pushing friendship on everyone and anyone she can get her grubby little hands on via poking her nose in everyone's business. That's how friends work, right? Strength in numbers and all that jazz.
