Applications are closed permanently. Thank you to everyone who has applied over the years! Before applying for a character, make sure you've read the rules and FAQ. You should also refer to the application guide to see what we're looking for in our applications. You may apply for one character per application cycle and three characters total. Please put your character's name and canon in the subject line of your application comment. Applications must be posted directly to this post and cannot be links. We will screen your application if you request it of us after we review it. Application challenges are allowed, but someone who did not place a reserve challenge cannot challenge a reserved application. Once reservations expire, an application challenge can only be placed before we process the character application of the applicant you would like to challenge. In the event of us nearing our application cap and having more applications than slots, we will attempt to choose the most well-written applications. First-time applicants will be processed first, then applications for second characters, and finally applications for third characters. We may allow more applications to be submitted than we have slots for in the name of greater selection. We will clarify in our response if an application is not being allowed into the game because of the cap or because of issues with the application not meeting the standards of the game. Sylar is a sociopath who is unfailingly focused on his goal of obtaining powers. As such, he is a chameleon, able to change his personality to suit whoever he's talking to in order to get what he wants. Unfortunately, because normal life is now alien to him, he has a difficult time blending in for too long, and people he spends more than a little time with tend to realize that something is 'off' about him.
Why does he want these special abilities so badly? When being honest, he would tell someone that it was 'in his nature' or give away the fact that he really wants to be unique or special. His rationalization is that he is meant to hunt, since he has the ability to take powers from other people.
However, deep-seated in his motivation is the continual loss of family, and an adopted mother who was constantly pushing him to be something more. He wants someone to recognize that he is special to them. He wants acknowledgement. He wants a father figure that won't abandon him, and someone who likes him for who he is already. It was the reason he spent most of his life as a watchmaker, and was unfailingly loyal to his overbearing mother. And it's the reason he's now doing whatever he can to make himself unique and 'better' than everyone else.
Unfortunately, the fact that he has been killing people to obtain all these special powers doesn't lend itself well to making lasting connections. His deep focus on manipulating people to get what he wants keeps him from understanding a great range of emotions as anything other than buttons to push. So he stays focused on his goals, collecting powers as best he can. He enjoys using them immensely, practices them often, and especially loves showing off with them.
So what is Sylar- Gabriel Gray- really like? It's hard to say, honestly, because he's become so adept at hiding himself. It's clear throughout the show that he actually does enjoy the small detail work of watchmaking, and he loves to read and learn new things. He can't stand it when someone one-ups him, or knows more than he does, and he really hates it when people treat him like a pawn. He tends to act petty and throw tantrums in response.
Having his powers taken away in Norfinbury will be a strong blow to him. He still is exceptional at pretending to be someone else, and will use that as almost a security blanket to reassure himself that he hasn't lost everything. He will immediately craft a new version of 'Zane', his current persona, in order to last longer and withstand scrutiny. But the frustration and close quarters may cause that mask to crack a lot more easily than it otherwise would.
In Snowblind, Sylar will do his best to endear himself to anyone who might allow it, acting the fool for the sake of collecting information. His goal in this place would be to: a)Find out what the hell is going on, b)Gain control of the situation, and c)Stay alive, in that order of priority. He will not be above killing someone to gain their supplies if he's feeling particularly desperate for something, although once he realized that they tend to come back he would be very careful when going about it. Most likely, he'd deem violence too much of a risk in most situations.
Flavor Abilities: I'd like Sylar to keep Zane Taylor's Melting ability, if possible. It would be particularly obnoxious to him if he retained an ability that he couldn't do anything with. Just to make sure he didn't figure out some way to make it particularly useful, I'd like to clarify that this Melting ability wouldn't work on organic matter, and he wouldn't be able to 'un-melt' anything.
Suitability: Sylar may not have been in this sort of environment before, but he is a highly adaptable sort of fellow. He won't like the cold, but he'll deal with it. He's good with resource management, using makeshift equipment, and figuring out new strategies on the fly.
That being said, he is not very emotionally stable. Losing his abilities and being effectively disabled by the exposure effects will make it difficult for him to keep his cool. When he's upset, it almost always leads to stupid decisions. He'll try to push a lie just a little too much, or he won't be careful enough at hiding his disdain for someone. He'll try to come back from it, but that doesn't always work. I expect that his mental health will fall apart more quickly than it did in canon.

Hello? Am I doing th--? …okay.
Sorry. My- my name is Zane. I know I'm still new here, and I've been reading…a lot. And I have a lot of questions that have probably been answered a million times, and some that no one can answer. Uh.
So I guess what it all comes down to, though, is- well, does anyone feel like they're making any progress? Are you closer to understanding any of it than you were when you first got here?
[That's a sufficiently open-ended question to hopefully net him a few answers, or at least let him know how people react to 'Zane'. At the very least, he'll make it so he's not the only one feeling lost and hopeless around here.]
REVISION REQUEST
While the understanding of Sylar's character is demonstrated clearly, we would like a little more information as to how specifically he will behave as "Zane." As it is at odds with his true nature and yet a crucial part of how he would interact with other people, we would like the personality section to describe his facade with more nuance, and how it may be affected as Sylar comes into contact with various kinds of people.
Please reply to this comment with your revisions within three days or your slot will be forfeit.

As Sylar presented him to Mohinder Suresh, Zane Taylor was an enthusiastic, kind-hearted, rather nervous man. He'd often be seen worrying at the tips to his sleeves, and when he spoke, it was softly and nervously. Sylar did his best to project an air of innocence, so his version of Zane could come off as rather a naive idiot at times. Since Mohinder liked to talk, Zane was tailored around that, being a very good listener that encouraged the speeches.
In Norfinbury, the personality of Zane would have to be adjusted somewhat. Unfortunately Sylar can't change it entirely, since Mohinder is there as well, but it will shift a little. The Zane in Norfinbury will be more subdued (Sylar can't keep up that level of enthusiasm indefinitely). His online presence will be more stumbling than Sylar likely wants it to be- he's not exceptionally good with network technology or etiquette, and it'll take him some study time before he gets used to it. He'll probably try to write this off as Zane being, again, rather slow on the uptake.
Zane will, however, ask a lot of questions. In Norfinbury, he's going to be exceptionally curious, and observant people will likely be able to tell that the way he asks questions is rather different when interacting with different people. With reticent people, he'll be more cautious, sidling up to them with unrelated questions before asking the one he cares about. With enthusiastic people, he'll attempt to mirror their responses. With obnoxious people, he'll let them insult him without noticing and continue on, apparently oblivious.
Zane appears to care a great deal about people's health and well-being, and will frequently ask people (especially the ones he ends up getting close to) about how they're doing. However, actively helping out will be something that he'll just keep 'missing the opportunity' for. The mysterious of the town will almost certainly catch Sylar's attention far more than someone else's needs. If he ends up in someone's actual physical vicinity, of course, Zane will suddenly put more effort into caring. However, because Sylar's level of caring is actually quite shallow, Zane's likely to come off as rather shallow as well.
ACCEPTED
The back half of this two-story A-frame house has collapsed, but the living room on the first floor and the balcony on the second are still accessible and, in the case of the living room, seal up at night. The plugs in the living room work all night, but while the electricity is working, the house has a heavy, almost suffocating atmosphere.
