Applications are closed permanently. Thank you to everyone who has applied over the years! Before applying for a character, make sure you've read the rules and FAQ. You should also refer to the application guide to see what we're looking for in our applications. You may apply for one character per application cycle and three characters total. Please put your character's name and canon in the subject line of your application comment. Applications must be posted directly to this post and cannot be links. We will screen your application if you request it of us after we review it. Application challenges are allowed, but someone who did not place a reserve challenge cannot challenge a reserved application. Once reservations expire, an application challenge can only be placed before we process the character application of the applicant you would like to challenge. In the event of us nearing our application cap and having more applications than slots, we will attempt to choose the most well-written applications. First-time applicants will be processed first, then applications for second characters, and finally applications for third characters. We may allow more applications to be submitted than we have slots for in the name of greater selection. We will clarify in our response if an application is not being allowed into the game because of the cap or because of issues with the application not meeting the standards of the game. 2/2 Warning for Zero Time Dilemma spoilers
WARNING for Zero Time Dilemma spoilers
Name: Phi
Canon: Zero Escape series
Age: 20
Gender: Female
Canon Point: Post-Phi/True end, basically between VLR and ZTD
Background Link: Zero Escape Wiki
Inventory: Her brooch
Current outfit (showin in icons)
Not much really she's basically frozen in carbonite
Personality:
When it comes to heart versus head, Phi is definitely more head than heart. She's analytical and thorough, a trait seen very clearly in particular in Virtue's Last Reward. She'll list and point out all possibilities of a given situation, even if they'll be summarily discounted out of hand for how unlikely they are (an example of this is the few times that she lists Quark as a suspect in the murders of other characters, not because she actually believes he did it, but simply to point out he lacks any kind of alibi, just like the other suspects). I'll expand on this more later, but when she ends running into conflicts - either problems from the Nonary game or butting heads with other players - she will think her way through the problem and use reason and logic as her basis of argument. For those times other characters don't - for example, during the first round of the AB game, if Sigma chooses "Ally" against Tenmyouji - she tends to be critical, calling his reasoning "misguided optimism."
The end result of this is a young woman who's sort of a pragmatic realist - able to see most if not all of the possible outcomes of a situation, and which ones are logically more likely or more desirable. She's the one who explains the possible outcomes of the AB game to Sigma, and when her knowledge of other timelines aren't affecting her priorities, she makes it clear that while Betray is the logical defensive move, it's not necessarily the choice they should make. In this way, she's able and willing to even play a sort of devil's advocate kind of role, often to the effect in canon of forcing people to really think about their decisions and why they make them.
Phi is extremely intelligent, and while some of it may come from being raised by two scientists (her foster parents), it also seems to be motivated heavily by curiosity and a desire to know and understand things. She started studying Latin while trying to investigate the inscription on the back of the brooch her mother left her. At multiple points during the game she's able to bring up relevant scientific concepts. Most notably, she's the one who figures out her and Sigma's burgeoning SHIFTer abilities, even before Sigma himself does. She's then the one who explains Schrödinger's cat and the multiple-worlds theory to Sigma, and to make the connection between those theories and what they can do. And on a similar note, the way that Sigma is able to shut down her attempts to leave them all behind as revenge for his betrayal (in another timeline) is to remind her that if she leaves, she won't be able to find out and understand the whats, whys, and hows of the Nonary game.
Overall though, she definitely prefers to keep a lot of things under lock and key. The few times where she shows emphatic emotional reactions are noted by the rest of the cast - such as when she yelps in fright at Tenmyouji spraying their bracelets with Luminol with the lights off. And on top of her emotions, Phi doesn't much information about herself in general slip - to the point that even after the information revealed in Zero Time Dilemma, we know relatively little about her upbringing, personal experiences, and ambitions prior to the Nonary Game. Generally speaking she just prefers to keep things to herself, as she'll be one of the first people to call out if something is not someone's business.
As a result of keeping her emotions well under control though, she's able to think well on her feet and in crisis situations. She overall takes the Nonary game in stride, to the point of unnerving some of the other characters. Especially during Virtue's Last Reward, Phi is often the person who comes up with plans of action for the other characters, either during downtime or especially during the bomb countdown, where they only had 30 minutes to find and deactivate 4 hugely explosive bombs. Phi is the one who realizes that they don't have time to wrestle with Dio while the bomb timer countdown is ticking, or that the only way to deal with Quark's Radical-6-induced suicide attempts is to put him under an anesthetic until they can find a more permanent solution.
It's not impossible for pressure to get to her or for her to lose her composure, though generally she prefers to be alone and keep it to herself when such instances happen. Prime example of this is a scene referenced in flashback during Zero Time Dilemma, where Diana finds her by herself as a way of coping with the stress of just waiting for something to happen, likely on top of her coming (as far as she can perceive) right from the end of the Nonary Game: AB edition. Meanwhile, in the extremely rare instances of her emotions overcoming her reason in front of others, it can be unpleasant. Phi will often lash out, and not particularly care about consequences until she's calmed down or reminded. Generally speaking though, it's extremely difficult to get her to that point - usually someone will need to be close to her to have that kind of effect at all.
When it comes to other people in general, while she's not outright abrasive, she definitely keeps people at arms length. She can be biting and sarcastic in general, or otherwise use words to keep people guessing. Likewise, she doesn't have a particular amount of patience for bullshit or idiocy. However, once a bond is formed, it's a really, really big deal to her. Sigma's betrayal in the Phi bad end of Virtue's Last Reward sets off of one of only two times she publicly loses composure in the entire series. But on the other hand, when she is trapped in an incinerator ready to fire, and Sigma is trapped in a chair with a gun with a 50/50 percent chance of killing him aimed at his head (and firing it being the only way to release Phi from the Incinerator), Phi insists that Diana not fire it, that even the risk that Sigma might die is too much, even though that would assure her own death. In this way it's fair to say that while deeper connections don't form easily for her, they're all the more heavily valued where they exist.
Flavor Abilities: Retaining her memories of the alternate timelines of VLR (some more clear than others) which isn't exactly a power but I thought I should mention it.
Suitability: Let's just say by this point, Phi's fairly used to being in life-or-death situations, and fairly used to trying to puzzle her way out. Her thorough and methodical approach to problems and investigations might be helpful in figuring out some of the mysteries and puzzles Norfinbury is kind of littered with. She's not afraid to step up and organize things if the situation calls for it, too. On the other hand, the environment itself is going to take (a lot of) getting used to, and meanwhile her sarcastic devil's advocate mentality might cause a bit of friction with other characters. Really, it'll be interesting to see how things play out with her.
RP Samples: Test drive! There are two threads on the other side of the link, one in-person and the other over the network. If this doesn't count as two separate samples let me know.
REVISION REQUEST
Unfortunately, the samples provided do not have enough comments to count as two separate samples. Please provide an additional sample. We would also like to ask that this sample showcase a situation in which Phi would be less likely to maintain her composure. Her usual behavior has been demonstrated sufficiently in the provided samples, so we would like to see an execution of her occasional emotional outbursts and how an environment like Norfinbury might push her to react this way.
Please reply to this comment with your revisions within three days or your slot will be forfeit.
Re: REVISION REQUEST
Of course Phi had put up a second post as soon as she'd realized - gotten the word out, asked for volunteers to bring food back to others, even reminded them all that the average human body could survive two to three weeks without food if necessary, so no they didn't need to all converge on the restock points all at once.
She'd called out Sigma one timeline for relying on misguided optimism. So of course she should have expected all too many people converging in the school cafeteria, looking for whatever they could find. With her and the talking dog that made ten. Which of course meant they'd been there for all of five minutes when three anomalies detached themselves from the shadows and flung themselves at the group.
She'd lost track after that, turning to head back the way she'd come. Judging by the sounds of footsteps behind her, somebody was following. A momentary glance backward confirmed that assessment, along with the fact that one of the anomalies had picked the two of them to follow. She cursed to herself with whatever breath she could spare as she ran even faster across the snow.
As soon as she reached the house, she sprinted through the door, waiting just long enough for the other person to follow before slamming it behind them and pinning it down. A few seconds later, there was the telltale thud as the anomaly attempted to follow. Stopped for now, but not for long.
"Don't just stand there! Make sure there isn't another way it can get in!" she snapped, bracing her shoulder as the anomaly slammed itself against the door a few more times. From what she could see already, there were at least another couple windows in this room alone, nevermind any others.
Her new (and very temporary, if she had anything to say about it) travelling companion took a step forward, "Are you sure you can hold that-"
"Just do it!" Was she the only one who read the anomaly guide? The door had stopped shuddering. "It's headed for one of the windows!"
"All right, all right, you don't have to bite my head off," they puffed, jogging off.
Really? "You're the one who that too many people getting food would be dangerous. I didn't make that second post to hear myself talk!" Even as they retorted with their own frustrations, the logical part of her brain kicked in and reminded her that - for now at least - they were both wasting their breath. And that they would need every sign they could to figure out where the anomaly was, including noise.
She didn't have to be happy about it, but they could have all the time to chew each other out once they survived this. "Just forget about it, we've got all day to keep this thing out, and it has all day to try to find a way in."
There wasn't any more argument after that.
ACCEPTED
A two-story A-frame house. The first floor has a living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom, and two bedrooms. The second floor has a master bedroom, master bathroom, and balcony. This house has a working wood-burning fireplace in the master bedroom, but no wood to burn in it. The armchair in the living room has been torn open and all of the foam inside and pieces of fabric outside have been removed. The couch has finger-sized holes cut into it. A sign reading "DAY 58. REACHABLE SHELTER ALONG SNOW BLOCK TO SOUTHEAST." has been placed on the table in the kitchen. "ALPHONSE ELRIC, STEPHANIE BROWN, FREYA CRESCENT, GREED, BIFF, RHYS, DAY FORTY EIGHT, TRAVELLING SOUTH-EAST" has been carved into one of the walls.
