Application

Applications are closed permanently. Thank you to everyone who has applied over the years!

Before applying for a character, make sure you've read the rules and FAQ. You should also refer to the application guide to see what we're looking for in our applications. You may apply for one character per application cycle and three characters total. Please put your character's name and canon in the subject line of your application comment. Applications must be posted directly to this post and cannot be links. We will screen your application if you request it of us after we review it.

Application challenges are allowed, but someone who did not place a reserve challenge cannot challenge a reserved application. Once reservations expire, an application challenge can only be placed before we process the character application of the applicant you would like to challenge.

In the event of us nearing our application cap and having more applications than slots, we will attempt to choose the most well-written applications. First-time applicants will be processed first, then applications for second characters, and finally applications for third characters. We may allow more applications to be submitted than we have slots for in the name of greater selection. We will clarify in our response if an application is not being allowed into the game because of the cap or because of issues with the application not meeting the standards of the game.

Flavor Abilities:
Tess's divine purviews are (in descending order of power and therefore centrality to her godhood): Health and Fertility, Guardianship, Feathered Serpents, Teamwork, Psychopomp, Sky, and a tiny smattering of Magic. A brief explanation of each purview as well as her other divine knacks is laid out below as her canon abilities are significant to her background even if she is going to lose almost all of them; each section also includes a proposal for flavor abilities she might retain.

Health and Fertility:
  • Canon abilities: Health and Fertility is Tess's primary purview and the seat of her greatest powers. Under normal circumstances, she is able to instantly and automatically assess the current medical condition of any person she looks upon, accurately diagnosing any and all ills on sight. With a touch, she is able to heal terrible wounds, cure nearly any disease, grant or take away fertility, speed or slow the aging process, and, at the most extreme end of her powers, even reshape the flesh of mortals like wet clay.
  • Proposed flavor abilities: None. I assume that all of Tess's Health-related abilities would confer too much benefit and are therefor off limits.

Guardianship:
  • Canon abilities: Tess's primary abilities as a Guardian goddess are related to placing her Mark on people and things in order to watch over them and come to their aid when she is needed. With a touch, she can place a Mark on a person, an object, or a threshold to a location (this might be a door, a window, or even a hole in the ground). Whenever a subject bearing her Mark is in physical danger Tess receives a reflexive intuition to that effect and is able to choose whether to instantly transport herself to their location; she is also able to check on the general well-being of any bearer of her Mark at any time. Whenever a person crosses a threshold she has marked, she is able to sense who has done so and choose whether to transport herself to that threshold.
  • Proposed flavor ability: I would like Tess to retain the ability to place or erase her Mark with a touch, but lose all the actual benefits it confers. She would not be able to sense danger or crossing of thresholds via her Marks and would not be able to teleport to them. Her Mark takes the form of a modified Rod of Asclepius (the actual Mark can be assumed to be a simplified version of the line drawing linked here). The only remaining "benefit" of being able to place a divine Mark rather than draw it freehand with a pen is that the Mark cannot be removed by anyone other than Tess without destroying the surface on which it has been placed.

Feathered Serpents:
  • Canon abilities: Tess can understand and make herself understood with coatls (supernatural feathered serpents), but does not do so through a shared language -- when communicating with coatls she does so by speaking in any ordinary human language and by interpreting the animal's natural posture, vocalizations, scent, and other forms of animal communication as though they were human speech. Communicating in this way does not imply a human-level of intelligence on the serpent's part; most such conversations are very basic. Tess is also able to display near-perfect command over coatls as a divine ability (she is not able to order them to do anything obviously suicidal). Additionally, Tess is able to perform a partial or complete transformation into a coatl at will, retaining her full mental faculties as she does so. Finally, Tess possesses an ability known as Serpent's Gaze that allows her to lock eyes with another person and render them unable to look away or act as long as she has their attention.
  • Proposed flavor abilities: Tess will retain the ability to 'speak' with her coatl, RGBV; she will be the only person able to so communicate with him. She will maintain her ability to control him only to the extent that an ordinary mortal owner of a pet snake would be able to manipulate the behavior of an animal habituated to her presence and trained to the extent that a snake is capable of being trained. While Tess will be able to influence RGBV's behavior, he may choose to disobey her. All other abilities listed for this purview will be nullified.

Teamwork:
  • Canon abilities: Teamwork is the divine ability common to all members of the Wayward pantheon, though Tess is only a middling practitioner of it. Ordinarily she would be able to use this ability to share some of her abilities with other Wayward gods or borrow their abilities in turn, and she would have some capability of denying other gods and scions access to their divine abilities.
  • Proposed flavor abilities: None; all Teamwork abilities will be nullified.

Psychopomp:
  • Canon abilities: the Psychopomp purview is related to all aspects of conveying subjects from one place to another, and is usually associated with gods and scions tasked with the relocation of the dead from the material plane to the afterlife. Tess has very limited Psychopomp abilities compared to Gio, the true Psychopomp of the Wayward, but the purview still grants her a few key abilities. She possesses an unerring sense of direction, the ability to flawlessly retain information from maps, and the ability to tell how far and in what direction she has been transported if she is relocated to a strange place (as, for instance, if she is rendered unconscious while being transported). She is also able to tell the distance and direction of anyone who contacts her remotely, whether by telephone, electronic network, or telepathy. Finally, she is capable of walking through walls (with some effort, she can bring other people with her when she does so).
  • Proposed flavor abilities: I would like Tess to retain an above-average ability to read and retain maps as well as above-average orienteering abilities, though these would both be reduced to a level possible for an ordinary human. All other Psychopomp abilities would be nullified.

Sky:
  • Canon abilities: Tess cannot be injured by falling, and with some minor effort she is capable of flight at the same speed at which she can walk or run. She is also able to summon lightning that coils around her hands, an ability she mostly uses to charge her phone.
  • Proposed flavor abilities: Tess's ability to fly and to avoid injuries from falling will be nullified. I would like her to retain the ability to charge battery-operated devices (such as phones and, say, Zunes) by holding them in her hands, but I will understand if this is ruled to be too much of a benefit to be allowed.

Magic:
  • Canon abilities: Tess is able to cast a single spell, the Unlidded Eye, that allows her to see magic and supernatural powers that are normally invisible to mortal sight. This spell also faintly reveals the threads of Fate that entwine the people around her.
  • Proposed flavor abilities: None; Tess's Magic ability will be completely nullified.

Miscellaneous divine knacks:
  • Canon abilities: Beyond her purviews, Tess also possesses a number of knacks that go beyond mortal abilities. She has perfect pitch that allows her to catch the subtlest variations in sounds, and a refined palate capable of identifying all ingredients in a given concoction by smell or taste. She can make mathematical calculations with the speed and accuracy of a living computer and learn any language after hearing only a few sentences of it spoken. Finally, she is capable of mentally interfacing with computers without even touching them, though she needs to be able to see the computer in question.
  • Proposed flavor abilities: Tess will retain her refined sense of pitch and taste as well as her ability to make mental computations only within the bounds of what is possible for an non-supernatural human. I assume that her ability to mentally interface with computers will need to be nullified. She will no longer have the ability to learn languages faster than is possible for a linguistically gifted human, but she will still be able to speak languages she had already learned in this fashion (ASCII binary, Atlantean, Egyptian Arabic, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Nahuatl, Norwegian, and Spanish).

Suitability:
Given that Tess has witnessed several examples of false realities (both the Hotel California and the Body Electric's current iteration feature Matrix-like networks designed to replace physical reality for the minds uploaded into them), and given that her pantheon has a number of enemies and troubled allies, she is going to immediately assume that she has been kidnapped and plugged into such a network. The most likely culprits, to her mind, will be the corrupted Body Electric, though she will also consider the possibility that Loki or a Titan might be involved. Without knowing why she has been stuck in the Matrix, Tess will attempt to avoid putting herself in a position where she might provide intel to an enemy or accidentally grant another god or Titan power over her. She will quickly come to the conclusion that her best bet for keeping any potentially dangerous information to herself is to pretend not to know anything of importance at all, and will therefor pretend to be an ordinary mortal from 2016 with no knowledge of the divine (having RGBV around will probably make this ruse harder to pull off once she starts meeting people face to face).

Tess often lacks caution in her day to day life, trusting in her ability to recover from injury, and will not be particularly frightened by the anomalies or by many of the day to day horrors Norfinbury throws her way. The things that will actually set off her fears and make her display what may seem like disproportionate caution will often be things that seem entirely mundane to most mortals. For example, she will be completely unwilling to enter into any deals (whether written or spoken) with other characters, as agreements spoken between gods or scions become instantaneously binding (there's a crack of thunder and everything; it's a big deal). Another example from her threads in the test drive meme is that any mysterious marks found on her skin or in her surroundings will worry her a great deal, as gods' Marks can be employed for a variety of purposes, and as she once carried a dangerous curse from Kane Takao that took the form of his Mark on her skin. Finally, she will be entirely opposed to personally engaging in any behaviors that might be construed as acts of worship on her part, including drawing the Mark of the Prophet, shedding blood at important sites, and so on, as doing so could theoretically grant another god power over her.

Apart from that, Tess will be willing and possibly even happy to throw herself into the exploration and puzzle-solving needed in Norfinbury, and will likely show significant disregard for her own safety when doing so. She'll likely become invested in protecting the people around her despite not being sure whether they're mortals plugged into the Matrix with her or completely fictional constructs. She's used to mortals dying on her because that's just what mortals do, but that doesn't mean she likes it or will allow it to happen when she's able to intervene to protect them.
