Application

Applications are closed permanently. Thank you to everyone who has applied over the years!

Before applying for a character, make sure you've read the rules and FAQ. You should also refer to the application guide to see what we're looking for in our applications. You may apply for one character per application cycle and three characters total. Please put your character's name and canon in the subject line of your application comment. Applications must be posted directly to this post and cannot be links. We will screen your application if you request it of us after we review it.

Application challenges are allowed, but someone who did not place a reserve challenge cannot challenge a reserved application. Once reservations expire, an application challenge can only be placed before we process the character application of the applicant you would like to challenge.

In the event of us nearing our application cap and having more applications than slots, we will attempt to choose the most well-written applications. First-time applicants will be processed first, then applications for second characters, and finally applications for third characters. We may allow more applications to be submitted than we have slots for in the name of greater selection. We will clarify in our response if an application is not being allowed into the game because of the cap or because of issues with the application not meeting the standards of the game.

REVISION REQUEST

Despite being a man willing to push the envelope with brutal methods and pushing the line he shouldn't cross further and further back, Bruce is quite adamant about saving innocent lives, and incredibly protective of those he cares about to the point he will readily sacrifice himself to save them. Bruce's issue is that he cares too much, feels deeply, and that compassion is actually evident in his brutal methods. It's an unending desire for justice. This is all stemming from one impossible desire to right the wrongs in the world. He's so desperate to save people that he finally becomes willing to break his rule about killing in order to get rid of what he perceives as an existential, world-ending threat in the form of Superman. When he realized that Superman had a mother (ironically with the same name as his own) and Superman became not an alien threat, but someone who was more human than the rest of them, he realized how far he'd fallen from his true ideals.

As Bruce Wayne, he gives generously to charity, knowing full well that criminals can be stopped before they're even created. But he really does genuinely care about other people. He's especially protective of people who are part of his 'team', when Metropolis was being attacked he was on the ground, actively racing through a city that was being destroyed even without his batsuit, trying to get his people out of his company's building, and comforted a frightened child. Alfred is the closest to him, and one of the few people on the planet that he'll actually listen to and take his advice. He might ignore his advice from time to time, but even if he won't admit it out loud, he knows that on some level Alfred is probably right. He can't imagine life without Alfred, he's not only a father figure but a partner in his work as well. He was also willing to take on more partners, first Dick Grayson, then Jason Todd. Having someone that you can trust out there on the dangerous streets of Gotham was important, but what Dick and Jason brought to him was a light in the darkness, someone to look at situations differently, make stupid jokes, have his back no matter what. They were basically like his sons, and when Jason died, Bruce took it like had lost a child.

Caring so much about someone and then losing them like that was too much for a man who already had lost so much at a young age, and it caused him to try and bury his compassion, to become more brutal, harsh, cynical, and unforgiving, taking out his pain on the criminals. His desire for justice has been twisted into straight up vengeance. He blamed himself for his death--the Joker has killed Jason, if Bruce was willing to outright kill criminals, maybe it wouldn't have happened in the first place. He remained extremely cynical and wouldn't fully open up again until Diana, Clark, and the rest of the Justice League came along and brought him out of it, to the point where he become even far more optimistic than most of the other members of the league. This optimism, though tempered by pragmatism, is what led to the creation of the league in the first place. Bruce believes that Clark is 'more human' than himself, and puts his faith in him even when there's the possibility he might turn on them as a result of being resurrected. Thanks to his previous experiences and learning from his mistakes, Bruce literally relies on the power of 'love' to save them all from an enraged, confused, recently-awoken-from-the-dead Superman by bringing out his secret weapon--not kryptonite this time, but Lois Lane. He was taking an enormous chance here, but this time, instead of trusting in fear, he trusted in hope.

Bruce is also actually very good at working with younger 'heroes', he's already had plenty of experience teaching Dick and Jason, so when Barry Allen/the Flash expresses to him his nervous inexperience, Bruce gives him solid advice that helps the kid out. He knows the fine line of being tough and being encouraging. Barry reminds him of his previous partners, and as painful as that is, Bruce realizes how much he misses it. Despite his obvious usefulness because of his powers, it's really not so bad having another quippy, enthusiastic kid around. Bruce isn't as close to Victor Stone/Cyborg and Arthur Curry/Aquaman as he is to Barry and Diana, but he still tries to effectively reach out to them because he knows the value of a well-functioning team.

Bruce is fascinated with Diana, and even Alfred can tell. He's definitely attracted to her, but she is his friend, and they've only gotten closer. Close enough to be vicious with arguments, too. When she tells him he needs to move on, he brings up her hiding for over a century because she couldn't get over Steve Trevor's death, so she's shouldn't talk about him moving on. Diana's statement hits him hard (as hard as her actual punch to his stomach), part of him doesn't want to move on--it's one of his most iconic character flaws--and strengths--combined. He uses his failures and pain of the past (his parents' death, Jason's death, Clark's death) as motivation, to fuel him, but it also prevents him from truly healing, the fear, guilt, and shame constantly in the background of his life. But he does care for Diana, wanting her to become the leader and inspiration she already is to him.

Despite everything, Bruce is a good man, who's working to save people. He wants to do good things, he's just willing to go to extreme lengths to get to his goals. Those extreme lengths can range from the extremely violent, to the extremely self-sacrificial. He knew in his initial battle with Superman that he was likely to be killed from it, and he knew when he was fighting Steppenwolf with the League he'd likely die from trying to draw off the Parademons as well. He's learning more and more to work with a team, to not keep people at arm's length, to use his skills to teach others and to help guide his teammates into being the best heroes they can possibly be. He wants Diana to inspire, that she can use her strengths to be a leader, he wants Clark to be the shining beacon of light and hope for the rest of the world. Bruce lives in the darkness both figuratively and literally, and knows full well just how badly people need that light. He's turned his mistakes and failures into something positive in the end.

This journal, thanks!

Bruce will be keeping the medkit with 1x combat gauze and 1x ace bandage. And understood about the movement penalty! Also will his suit/cape/cowl still be fireproof or only react the same way conventional plate armor would? And would he see any difference in the material of his suit or cowl if he opened it up if he was curious about the armor, or would it still look the same as it did in Gotham?
