Application

Applications are closed permanently. Thank you to everyone who has applied over the years!

Before applying for a character, make sure you've read the rules and FAQ. You should also refer to the application guide to see what we're looking for in our applications. You may apply for one character per application cycle and three characters total. Please put your character's name and canon in the subject line of your application comment. Applications must be posted directly to this post and cannot be links. We will screen your application if you request it of us after we review it.

Application challenges are allowed, but someone who did not place a reserve challenge cannot challenge a reserved application. Once reservations expire, an application challenge can only be placed before we process the character application of the applicant you would like to challenge.

In the event of us nearing our application cap and having more applications than slots, we will attempt to choose the most well-written applications. First-time applicants will be processed first, then applications for second characters, and finally applications for third characters. We may allow more applications to be submitted than we have slots for in the name of greater selection. We will clarify in our response if an application is not being allowed into the game because of the cap or because of issues with the application not meeting the standards of the game.

(The wiki types it more as game overview than character overview, so I'll go ahead and type it up myself! Heavy spoilers within, of course.)

A fall afternoon ten years ago, a young Lynne was playing at a park alone, roasting a sweet potato and listening to loud music through her headphones. She doesn't hear the yelling behind her, she was a young innocent stranger who only had the misfortune of being in the park that day and caught up in the whole mess. Grabbing her from behind, she ends up passing out from fright as a fugitive with a gun takes her hostage. The rest of her memory isn't clear, but when her eyes opened again, there was a bearded detective in a green coat carrying her, and the fugitive, lying motionless on the ground.

"Y-you saved me, Mister?"  "I was just doing my job. The gods... they're the ones who saved you."

"What's your job, Mister?"  "
Me? I'm a police detective."

She stood up, and then the detective smiled and told her still kneeling, they'd give these detective badges to children who were very brave. He took one and gently pinned it to Lynne's coat. It was then on, that she knew her life course was set; she wanted to be like her hero, Detective Jowd. But five years later, something happened that shocked not only her, but the rest of the people who knew him, friends, those at his workplace, and even strangers.

Her hero had confessed to the murder of his wife.

Knowing there had to be some kind of mistake, when Lynne was finally old enough to pass the detective's exam, and started a solo investigation to clear his name and prove him innocent despite his claims to the contrary. Maintaining her close relations with him and his remaining family, she called him in jail everyday, mostly to talk casually, as she knew he would be unhelpful answering questions to the crime he said he committed. She refused to believe he did it. Jowd's daughter, Kamila, who would've otherwise been alone, now lived with her in her humble apartment, and the two became close like sisters. They also adopted an excitable and loving Pomeranian named Missile.

Time was running short, between doing her own job and looking after Kamila and the abrupt calling for punishment further than imprisonment for Detective Jowd, she thought she'd finally have the evidence she needed when she received a call to meet her at the junkyard, about "a breakthrough in the case". But when she arrived, there was an unconscious body. She knelt down and tried to shake him awake, before realizing he was a corpse. Then a glasses-wearing stranger in a suit approached from behind her, with a rifle. It was here, that Lynne died for the first time.

She later comes to know, that victims revived by special powers of the dead--that had been named "ghost tricks", have a faint memory of being dead and can communicate with the spirits. The one who brought her back to life by manipulating the events of four minutes before her demise explained, he was a ghost searching for his own lost identity. And if she could--that she give some of her time to figuring out who he was, before he ceased to exist in the morning. Lynne turned her head down and sincerely apologized. She knew Jowd's punishment sentencing could soon be carried out as soon as that same night, and she said to him solemnly but honestly she doubted she would have time to help him.

"But I'm afraid I'm still going to ask you... Ask you to save me."

The ghost named Sissel nodded (kind of--ghosts don't technically have physical heads), and said he wasn't going to treat her life as a bargaining chip. He inwardly thought, most anyone would just have lied for their own benefit so they could be brought back to life. Her integrity made him feel he could trust her as being a good person. And so after he changed the circumstances so that she could live on, they went what they assumed was their separate ways... But as the night continued, Sissel would soon learn their fates were more intertwined, and not only with each other, than they realized...

Lynne | Ghost Trick | Reserved 3/3

Personality:

Lynne is an upbeat rookie detective with a strong will, whose most defining trait may be in that she never wavers throughout the game in which she's based. Literally, with Sissel's help even (multiple) death(s) won't stop her from carrying on in her self-designated mission for those she cares deeply about. One could say stubbornness has to do with it in part--a firm "it's not over until it's over" mentality. Devoted to the cause of saving her hero by proving him innocent up until the deadline and without knowing of anyone helping her, she even shamelessly yells at a person of authority more than a few times about the thing--Her devotion to those dearest to her runs to her heart's core, and she takes a headstrong approach in making sure she can be there for them, even in the cases where they might not want her to get involved. While there's only really one person who's less than enthusiastic about her attempts to help them, this could probably apply to other individuals who she's worried for.

It is implied that for the most part, Lynne is independent and doesn't have close family to speak of. She was alone in the park as a little girl, and in present time no mention is made of relatives who could be worried about her. This doesn't seem to bother her too much, and she takes the role of being a big sister and caretaker to Kamila, who seems to really enjoy her company. She does do her best to keep those she's supposed to be taking care of happy, the apartment setting shows Christmas decorations that they likely did together, and a batch of doughnuts. Missile's line about being grateful to have been born Kamila's doggie may also mean that he was initially bought for Kamila to keep her company and safe. She likely figured it was the least she could do, Kamila had lost both parents, it must have been very hard for her. Lynne thoughtfully tries to leave her out of the more dangerous things that happen through the evening, even if the keyword here is tries. (No one in this game stays very lucky, as you can see.)

She's an optimistic lady with mostly a one-track mind, and Sissel sometimes has to raise his figurative eyebrows at her brazenness about her deaths. It's probably less of her being unconcerned about her own life, but that once she was aware she could be brought back to life, even dying was only a minor setback. Not to say she isn't fearless otherwise, she actually didn't waver too much at her first gunpoint encounter with a hitman. Two of her deaths are even caused by saving someone else, and one wouldn't have turned out a lethal end if not for a followup freak accident. It's in part police training, but definitely also her own personality. Lynne shows concern for others multiple times within the evening, inclusive of strangers she doesn't know. This extends to potentially sacrificing her own life if she can do anything about rescuing them. The main character notes she must have a deep sense of duty. There isn't a lot she's afraid of, on-top of these other things she also gets framed for a crime she doesn't remember committing, runs into a few other corpses before they get revived, and she still handles these situations relatively without panic.

Being very and refreshingly honest a person herself, she is not however immune to knowing when someone's being sassy or otherwise obnoxious. In fact Lynne isn't the epitome of grace when she's annoyed, not violent, but she yells a fair bit which can make her seem like she's younger than she actually is. Sissel notes, she ends up somewhat bossy whenever she's caught in her own hasty pace and someone can't keep up. This impatience however might be because of her reliance on Sissel, and it's really also a sign of her faith in him. With those she isn't as familiar with, she probably won't bark orders around so much, though she'll likely maintain her own aptitude for getting as many things done as possible. She doesn't explicitly have arguments with people within her canon, but whether she gets discouraged and backs down or keeps fighting for her standpoint seems to depend on the situation and the person rather than keeping up a trend. Her morals however, are always in the right place.

Even if she's on the side of justice, she is naturally understanding and can be sympathetic as she tries to look at the motives where someone came from. Later on, even someone who personally targeted her and involved so many in it, she was able to cry for the tragedy that befell them, and think "no wonder this happened". However, things considered, she's still a member of the police, so on a more general basis, she'd still look down on many actions that would be considered dishonest or illegal. Or say she understands, but it was ultimately still wrongdoing and she'd want them to get that. The warmth of her heart and her normally bright personality might be how certain individuals became aligned to helping her out, even to reaping no real benefit from it themselves. Resulting from this, Lynne isn't very afraid of asking for favors.

Up to the end and in the bleakest of situations, the detective never yields against adversity. She was on her mission in another important rescue, when there was a loud crash, and the rest of her memory of the situation is fuzzy and unclear.

She wakes up in another world entirely.

Flavor Abilities:

Lynne is considerably plucky within her own canon despite suffering multiple deaths, so she can laugh about it (a la her fandom-legendary "Ha ha! I died again!" or even only consider it as an inconvenience when she has a friend able to resurrect her. "Look at me! I'm dead! What took you so long (to come and revive me)!?" As such, she won't be as shaken by the whole dying thing, although unlike her canon's revivals, there are more solid consequences in Norfinbury. Also her naturally gravity-defying hairdo might count.

Suitability:

If there is anything that Lynne is, she's a trooper who doesn't give up, even when she can end up horribly unlucky. As a detective, although a rookie, she'll be more than enthusiastic to help out with investigations into their surroundings. For what she wants to achieve, she won't give up even if it looks hopeless. Her initial boundless optimism will also serve as an interesting--if sometimes concerning, dynamic when talking with other survivors. Even so, she'll do her best to understand everyone's mindset on it, good and bad, and encourage them to not surrender to their harsh environment. That she has a voracious appetite might serve as one setback, but will be written in appropriately. --Also, I'm not going to lie here, she'll totally die a few more times as, partly, a joke. It's kind of her thing, she can handle it.
