Obituary

Obituary

The town of Norfinbury publishes obituaries over the network every two IC days (six OOC days). If your character dies for any reason (due to IC actions, as part of a hiatus, or as a result of being idled/dropped), you are required to report their death here. Due to the time-sensitive nature of the obituaries, we ask that you do not backdate deaths into a prior obituary period, and please be mindful when you plot a character death.

Characters who have died as a result of IC actions will revive at erratic times. Additionally, upon revival, they will suffer a temporary loss of a major sense, ability, emotion, or memory for a minimum of three OOC days and a maximum of one OOC month. Moderators will roll for the amount of OOC days (between one and seven) until your character revives. We will reply to your report with the day and time that your character will revive as well as where they will be reviving. However, we will not be deciding what your character loses as a result of their death. If you are submitting a character death for your hiatus, please tell us the OOC date that you will be returning.

Character Name: Tess ([personal profile] motherserpent)
IC Date of Death: 345
OOC Date of Death: April 1
Type of Death: IC consequence (anomaly attack)
Loss: Tess will lose her humanity, meaning she will lose all emotional and ethical context outside of her godhood and cease to place value on mortal lives outside their utility to her.

I'd like Tess to be dead for a couple days; can she please revive on 347 or later?

Character Name: Royce Melborn ([personal profile] bywolves)
IC Date of Death: Day 344
OOC Date of Death: April 1st-ish. Wouldn't mind having him respawn a few days later rather than earlier.
Type of Death: IC consequence - Hannibal is killing him, unless that changes??
Loss: Memories. He's only going to remember life up to right after he got out of Manzant Prison in his original canon.

Character Name: Alfie Solomons ([personal profile] devoutish)
IC Date of Death: 344

Type of Death: IC consequence! He, Royce, and Gabriel are all being killed by Hannibal.
Loss: The ability to send messages privately.

OH and also seconding Flurry's request to respawn earlier rather than later, if possible - I don't want to have to backdate a return post too far, if I can avoid it.

[personal profile] fiftheclipse 2018-04-16 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Junpei Tenmyouji ([personal profile] fiftheclipse)
IC Date of Death: Day 350
OOC Date of Death: Hasn't been played out yet, but the entry exists as of April 15th so that's a thing?
Type of Death: IC consequence, tortured and killed by Squalo after harassing him for too long. It's going to be videotaped, but one of us will make sure to post to the plot requests before anything goes public.
Loss: I have no idea. I'm hoping something relevant to how things go down, but will default to his memory of the torture itself if nothing comes up. Whatever it is, I'll reply again with it as soon as I know!

Also, requesting that he gets on the same obituary announcement as Clover?

EDIT: As a side note, I'm kind of overwhelmed with my current threads, so if he could please revive after the announcement instead of before, that would be.. really helpful.

Character Name: Tess([personal profile] motherserpent)
IC Date of Death: Night 349
OOC Date of Death: April 12 (submitted April 16, sorry!)
Type of Death: IC consequence -- after the Joker attempts to restrain her, Tess will come at him to try to kill him only to be killed herself.
Loss: Tess will be losing all memories of godhood and of Norfinbury -- the most recent thing she'll remember is going to work the evening before Quetzalcoatl awakened her to her divine nature, so she'll be under the impression that she's an ordinary human and what is this.

Character Name: Kunsel ([personal profile] deus_ex_phs)
IC Date of Death: 353? (see question)
OOC Date of Death: April 26
Type of Death: Hiatus. Returning on May 12.
Loss: His brain-to-mouth filter. He will say what he really thinks.

QUESTION: Is it possible for characters with the red lines to disappear from Robert Miller's quarantine cells (or whatever they are)? At least one of my group mates has already had their character react to Kunsel's disappearance, since he has red lines on his body and would have been abducted, but I haven't been feeling this event and won't be keeping track of it during my hiatus, so it would be helpful if Kunsel could die at some point during it to explain his lack of knowledge about what happened.

[Infinity War Spoilers]

[personal profile] zunesareawesome 2018-05-07 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Peter Quill ([personal profile] zunesareawesome)
IC Date of Death: 357
OOC Date of Death: 5/6
Type of Death: IC consequence, Canon Update
Loss: Peter will be blind.

Canon Update: (cw: Major character deaths, body horror)

It's been about four years since the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and the gang is even more of a family now than ever. Groot has even reached adolescence.

The new version of the Milano, the Benatar, is racing towards a distress signal, in hopes of both finding people to save and also maybe sorta getting something in return for it. Thor suddenly crashes onto their windshield and he's retrieved and revived back into consciousness. Thanks to Thor's information, group discovers that Thanos is after the Infinity Stones again and has now acquired two of them, and destroyed Xandar the previous week. Thor has deduced where Thanos will go next. They decide to split into two groups--Rocket and Groot will go with Thor to Nidavellir to make a Thanos-killing weapon, and Peter, Gamora, Mantis, and Drax will go to Knowhere to stop Thanos from getting the Reality Stone.

En route to Knowhere, Gamora makes Peter promise, on his mother, that he will kill Gamora if Thanos somehow gets to her. It's a heartbreaking promise, but Peter agrees to it, hoping it will never come to that. They kiss, but unfortunately Drax ruins the moment.

Knowhere seems deserted, and the gang finds Thanos interrogating the Collector. Nobody listens to Peter when he tries to guide them on how to approach carefully, Drax nearly runs ahead but Mantis stops him--unfortunately, his body crashing down makes a loud noise. Peter tries to tell Gamora which way to go but she doesn't listen, and attacks and seemingly kills Thanos. Unfortunately it's only an illusion and he captures her, using the Reality Stone to split Drax up and turn Mantis into ribbons. Peter approaches, meaning to shoot Thanos, but Gamora insists he shoots her instead. Peter's absolutely devastated, he can't believe this is actually happening, but he will keep his promise to Gamora even as Thanos teases them both by moving her closer. The two confess their love for each other before he fires, but it turns out to be much worse--his gun shoots bubbles instead and disappears, Thanos commenting that he likes Peter, since he was able to follow through with that decision to shoot. He disappears with Gamora, and without the Reality Stone in proximity, Drax and Mantis return to normal Peter picks up Gamora's sword in shock.

Mantis receives a message from Nebula to meet her on Titan, where they'll be expecting Thanos to show up next. On Titan, Peter and his remaining crew attack the inhabitants of a newly crashed ship, which are actually Peter Parker, Dr. Stephen Strange, and Tony Stark. There's a tense stand-off until Tony figures out that Peter is from earth, and they all try to make a plan of attack. Stephen looks into the future at this point as well.

Once Thanos arrives on Titan, their plan goes surprisingly well and they manage to pin him down long enough to start to get the gauntlet off. It's also Peter's plan, which he's pretty smug about, and he tries to get Thanos, under Mantis' spell, to reveal to him where Gamora is. Unfortunately this makes things so much worse--between what Mantis says about him mourning, and Nebula revealing that he's got the Soul Stone and Gamora's not with him, implies that Gamora is dead. Peter absolutely snaps in two, and demands to know if it's true--when Thanos confirms it, he loses it and starts hitting him wildly in anguished rage, having to be held back by Tony. This wakes Thanos up and he's able to break loose even though they almost got the Gauntlet off.

They continue to battle him--Peter gets knocked out by a blast from the power stone and is saved by Spider-Man when Thanos brings a moon down on them. Peter tries to make one last attack after Stephen gives the Time Stone to Thanos, but it's too late--he disappears, traveling to earth, and a distraught Peter asks, "Did we just lose?"

Not long after that when they all regroup, Mantis notices something is happening. She suddenly disintegrates in a puff of dust as Peter's holding onto her. He looks over at Drax, who is also disintegrating and frightened--and he also disappears in a puff of dust. It's happening, Thanos has done the snap, and Peter's just lost nearly everyone. Tony tries to keep him from panicking by saying, "steady Quill," but it's too late. Peter too disintegrates into dust after a defeated, "Oh, man."

MAJOR INFINITY WAR SPOILERS IN UPDATE SECTION

[personal profile] thewarningafter 2018-05-07 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
Character Name: Dr. Stephen Strange ([personal profile] thewarningafter)
IC Date of Death: 357
OOC Date of Death: May 6, 2018
Type of Death: IC consequence/canon update.
Loss: Stephen is going to take after his facetwin by losing the ability to make short term memories.

Canon update: Stephen's new canon point is the end of Infinity War.

About a year has passed for Stephen, during which time he made leaps and bounds in his study of the mystic arts, mastering many spells and techniques unknown to him at his previous canon point.

He became aware at some point that Odin was residing on Earth but respected Odin's desire to be left alone. When Thor and Loki arrived in New York in search of Odin, Stephen reacted by immediately imprisoning Loki and luring Thor into the Sanctum where Stephen could question him; once he knew their mission he assisted them in locating Odin in order to expedite their departure from Earth.

My interpretation is that Stephen's approach to dealing with Thor and Loki was strategy born of knowing he wouldn't win a real fight against either of them. Rather than risk a direct confrontation, he removed Loki from the situation and kept Thor both metaphorically and literally off-balance through the entire encounter by plying him with beer and constantly shifting space around him. This indicates that while Stephen has become a much more powerful magic user, he's aware of his limitations and is still inclined to use trickery rather than force.

INFINITY WAR SPOILERS START HERE

Presumably about a year after Stephen took over the New York Sanctum, Bruce Banner crashed through the roof, having been sent by Heimdall when the Asgardian refugees' spaceship was attacked by Thanos, a powerful being who wanted to gather all of the Infinity Stones in order to wipe out half the life in the universe. The Time Stone was in Stephen's possession at that time; he immediately recruited the aid of Tony Stark (and, by extension, the Avengers).

As Stephen, Tony, Bruce, and Wong were discussing how to locate the other Infinity Stone known to be on Earth, Greenwich Village came under attack by the Black Order, followers of Thanos. Spider-Man joined the fight; while Wong was able to send one of the attackers, Cull Obsidian, to the arctic, Stephen was captured by the other attacker, Ebony Maw. Because Stephen had bound the Time Stone to himself, Ebony Maw took him prisoner aboard his spaceship. Spider-Man and Iron Man took chase and were able to board the ship.

Stephen awoke to Ebony Maw's efforts to coerce him into breaking the binding spell via torture, but was shortly rescued by Spider-Man, Iron Man, and his own Cloak of Levitation. He mostly seemed annoyed about being rescued; while it's really unclear how Stephen thought he was going to get out of that situation, he was likely pretty confident in his ability to stand up to torture owing to his previous experiences in the Dark Dimension (and, you know, never having lived through Noisy Black). Though Stephen wanted to turn back for Earth, Tony was able to convince him to press on instead to the ship's intended destination, Titan. At that time, Stephen explicitly stated that protecting the Stone and keeping it out of Thanos's hands was more important to him than the lives of anyone present.

After crash-landing on Titan, Stephen, Tony, and Peter Parker shortly came under attack by about half of the Guardians of the Galaxy (Peter Quill, Drax, and Mantis), both groups misidentifying the others as allies of Thanos. The fight ended in a standoff and they were able to come to an understanding and work together from that point forward, but Stephen and Tony were generally not impressed by the Guardians' intellects.

While the others on Titan argued over how to handle Thanos, Stephen used the Time Stone to view alternate futures in order to determine the best course of action. He viewed and analyzed more than fourteen million potential outcomes, of which only one ultimately went in their favor. With Stephen as their guide, the assembled team made their plan to subdue Thanos and take the Infinity Gauntlet (and the Stones he had so far gathered) from him. They were initially successful; their combined efforts (and that of Nebula, who made a dramatic entrance by crashing her spaceship into Thanos mid-battle) enabled them to pin Thanos down long enough to let Mantis put him in a trance. However, as they were attempting to remove the gauntlet, Peter Quill interrogated Thanos and learned that Thanos had killed Gamora. Peter went into an anguished rage and began beating Thanos with his pistol, breaking Mantis's control.

The ensuing fight was ugly and rapidly went against the Guardians and Avengers. Stephen briefly held his own against Thanos in a one-on-one fight, but Thanos was able to defeat both Stephen and Tony while the others were unconscious or fleeing for their lives. Just as Thanos was about to kill Tony, Stephen offered him the Time Stone in exchange for Tony's life. Thanos took it and left them to go to Earth and collect the last stone, at which point Stephen commented to a distraught Tony that they were "in the end game now."

Not long after, Thanos successfully won his battle against the other defenders of Earth and obtained the final Infinity Stone. With a snap of his fingers, Thanos caused half the people in the universe to spontaneously stop existing. On Titan, everyone except Tony and Nebula disintegrated into dust, including Stephen, whose last words to a distraught devastated Tony were that "it had to be this way."

I think it's clear that Stephen planned to allow Thanos to take the Time Stone. Whatever ultimate outcome he saw in the one "good" timeline required Thanos to succeed and required him to believe he had truly bested them in battle, thus Stephen's choice not to tell any of the others until it was too late for them to alter the course of events.

What's not clear is how the timeline will proceed. Stephen died apparently confident that he'd set things on the correct path, but whatever IC knowlege he has of coming events is OOCly unavailable. As okay'd here, Stephen is going to come back without clear memories of the futures he saw, including the one he set into motion. I reason that without his powers and the powers of the Time Stone, Stephen is arguably incapable of remembering or differentiating between fourteen million futures. He will remember the actions he took and he will remember that he undertook them believing they would lead to the best possible outcome, but he will not remember what that outcome is going to be.

TL;DR:
-Stephen has become a much more powerful magic user.
-Stephen met Odin, Thor, Loki, Tony Stark, Peter Parker, Peter Quill, Drax, Mantis, and Nebula.
-Stephen saw the future and deliberately allowed half the people in the universe to die, including himself, in service of orchestrating a "good" timeline in which they somehow ultimately triumph over Thanos.
-Stephen will remember doing all of this, but will not remember what he saw of the future.
